Suffolk lawmakers weigh pay freeze
Suffolk lawmakers debated for nearly a half-hour last week over a bill calling for the body to take a voluntary wage freeze. Backers said it sent a signal that union concessions are needed; foes called it pandering, since every lawmaker can already freeze his pay.
Records show only Legis. Tom Cilmi (R-Bay Shore) has frozen his salary since 2011. He's paid the 2010 annual rate of $91,167 rather than the current $93,958. Legis. Steve Stern (D-Dix Hills) touted "voting to voluntarily freeze his own salary through Dec. 31, 2013." He accepted a $1,761 pay raise last January; his freeze wouldn't take effect until next year when lawmakers are eligible for another boost.-- Rick Brand
