Suffolk lifts swimming advisory at 64 beaches

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services on Wednesday lifted a swimming advisory at 64 county beaches.

Because of heavy rainfall, the agency told swimmers to stay out of the waters Monday and Tuesday.

The advisory is a precautionary measure for beaches known to have substantial storm-water runoff caused by heavy rainfall. The runoff can raise bacteria levels so the waters fail to meet the New York State standards for swimming, health officials said.
