The Suffolk County Department of Health Services on Wednesday lifted a swimming advisory at 64 county beaches.

Because of heavy rainfall, the agency told swimmers to stay out of the waters Monday and Tuesday.

The advisory is a precautionary measure for beaches known to have substantial storm-water runoff caused by heavy rainfall. The runoff can raise bacteria levels so the waters fail to meet the New York State standards for swimming, health officials said.

Information on Suffolk County beach closings is available by calling the health department's Bathing Beach hotline, 631-852-5822, or by calling the department's Office of Ecology, 631-852-5760.
