Suffolk officer suffers minor injuries after Coram fire

A Suffolk County police officer was transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation Thursday after he was the first responder to a Coram house fire, officials said.

No one else was injured, police said, and the officer's injury is considered minor.

Debbie Tunjian, the Middle Island fire department spokeswoman, said firefighters responded to 8 Westfield Rd., about 5:17 p.m., where a blaze began while a resident was cooking on the stove. "It spread throughout the whole kitchen, and up through the attic and roof." Tunjian said.

The police officer, whose name was not released, arrived at the house just before the first firefighters, she said. A Middle Island fire department ambulance transported him to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment.

The only person home at the time of the fire left the building on their own, Tunjian said, and was not in need of medical attention.

About 25 firefighters from Middle Island, Gordon Heights and Coram fire departments brought the blaze under control within about 45 minutes, Tunjian said.

No other buildings were damaged, she said.
