Suffolk officer uses Narcan to save OD victim

A 22-year-old man was revived by a Suffolk County police officer who administered an intranasal drug to the apparent overdose victim, saving his life early Monday, police said.

Police said the incident occurred at a home on Sheldon Place in Commack just after midnight. The identity of the victim was not released.

Police said that Second Precinct Officer Joseph Mango, responding to a 911 call from a woman reporting that the 22-year-old was unconscious and not breathing, arrived to find the man unresponsive -- and a syringe nearby.

The officer administered a dose of intranasal Narcan, reviving the victim. The man was then transported by Commack Volunteer Ambulance to Huntington Hospital, police said.

His condition was not immediately known.

Officers in all Suffolk precincts were issued Narcan, a prescription intranasal used to reverse opiate overdoses, as part of a statewide pilot program being conducted by the state Department of Health.
