Suffolk police officer helps deliver baby in Brentwood
A Suffolk County police officer and a first-responder from Islip Exchange Ambulance helped a woman deliver a healthy baby boy at her home in Brentwood on Thursday.
After assisting the woman, police said, the officer was able to locate the woman's 6-year-old son, who was headed home from school -- and arrange for him to be temporarily cared for by a nearby neighbor.
Police said the officer and the ambulance crew had responded to the home on Jefferson Avenue after a 911 call about "a woman in active labor" just after 3 p.m.
The responders found the woman, Jasmine Perrera, was eight months' pregnant -- and about to give birth. Officer Eiffel Ramirez and the ambulance crew member then helped Perrera deliver the baby. The mother and the baby were taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.
After the delivery, police said, Ramirez located Perrera's 6-year-old and arranged for him to be cared for.
The baby's name was not immediately available.
