Suffolk police probe serious accident involving Hauppauge fire chief's vehicle

A Bay Shore woman lost control of her SUV and collided head-on Saturday with a fire chief's vehicle in Hauppauge, leaving an 11-year-old girl in critical condition, authorities said.

Suffolk County police said Iris Hernandez was headed north on the 500 block of Wheeler Road at 11:17 a.m. when her 2001 Nissan Xterra struck the marked Hauppauge Fire Department vehicle driven by First Assistant Chief Robert Wind.

Hernandez, 38, told responding officers the SUV "spun into oncoming traffic" a few blocks from the fire station, police said.

Her daughter, Ismeily Perdomo-Hernandez, was thrown from the vehicle, and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, according to police.

Wind, 31, was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Hernandez's other passengers included her son, Inmer Perdomo-Hernandez, 9, and her sister, Cindy Hernandez, 29, who were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Fire department officials could not be reached for comment.

Wheeler Road between Rolling Woods Court and Kings Highway was closed during the crash investigation, police said.
