Suffolk police rescue 3 boys after canoe caught in rough waters of Long Island Sound

Three Huntington Station boys whose canoe was caught in rough waters and high winds were rescued from Long Island Sound on Monday by Suffolk County police's Marine Bureau.

Police said in a news release that the three, brothers David Miles, 12, and Kenyon Miles, 10, and their friend, Chris Gurr, 12, launched their canoe from Crab Meadow Beach in Northport to go fishing.

They paddled out from the protection of the shoreline, and the increased winds took them even farther out, 1 1/2 miles offshore, police said.

Marine Bureau Officers Michael O'Leary and Charles Marchiselli, on routine patrol in the Sound aboard patrol vessel Marine Bravo, spotted the canoe and saw that the three were unable to paddle back to shore against 13- to 17-knot winds and waves 2 feet high.

The officers put the youths and the canoe aboard their police boat and returned them to their waiting parents on Crab Meadow Beach at about 6:43 p.m.

None of the boys was injured, and each was wearing a life vest, police said.
