Suffolk police rescue man from basement fire
Two Suffolk County police officers came to the aid of a man suffering from smoke inhalation Friday night in a Bay Shore basement.
The officers responded to a possible house fire on Penataquit Avenue at about 10:45 p.m., police said.
When they arrived, residents who lived upstairs said there was smoke coming from the basement apartment in the home.
When the officers entered the basement, they found Thomas Moran, 57, unconscious and lying on the floor, police said. The officers were able to wake up Moran, but he remained disoriented and lethargic. Moran was later carried out of the home.
The Bay Shore Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the cause of the excessive smoke, which appeared to be burning food, officials said.
Moran as well as the responding officers were treated for smoke inhalation and released from Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.
