Suffolk police to announce new pedestrian safety initiative

Suffolk County police are unveiling a new program aimed at increasing pedestrian safety.
Police will announce the details of the statewide Pedestrian Safety and Enforcement Program at 11 a.m. Friday in Lindenhurst.
The program combines education and increased enforcement of traffic laws for both pedestrians and drivers, according to police.
Almost 100 pedestrians were killed or seriously injured in Suffolk police jurisdictions in 2016, the department said.
