A woman and her newborn have been hospitalized after she gave birth and then reported the baby had just been found, Suffolk County police said.
Police said a 911 call about a baby being found came in at 7:35 p.m. Monday from Oak and Cedar streets in Copiague.
“The woman is now hospitalized and the baby is in stable condition,” Suffolk police Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers said in a statement.
The statement said child protective workers and police were investigating “the reason for the mother’s actions and whether the woman has any other children.”
News 12 Long Island said the baby was found in front of a store at Oak Plaza, a small shopping center at the corner of Oak and Cedar streets.
In his statement Meyers did not say if the infant was in fact abandoned.
Police declined to provide other details.
In New York State, the Abandoned Infant Protection Act allows parents to abandon a newborn up to 30 days after birth without leaving their names and without fear of prosecution if the baby is left in a safe manner, such as at a hospital, staffed police station or fire station.
