Suffolk salt marshes to be treated for mosquitoes

Parts of some Suffolk County salt marshes will be treated with pesticide Tuesday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting, with an eye toward controlling mosquito larvae, the county health department said.

Precautions are not recommended, health officials said, as "the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas."

The pesticides being used -- Vectobac 12AS and Altosid liquid concentrate -- "have no significant human toxicity," officials said.

The marshes are located in areas of the towns of Brookhaven, Babylon, Riverhead, East Hampton, Southampton, Southold and Islip.
