The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office on Friday introduced 38 new recruits to the rank of correction officer in a ceremony at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco welcomed the new officers, saying they have accepted a responsibility to serve all Suffolk County residents.

"It means you have made a sacrifice by putting your life on the line for the greater good," DeMarco said in a news release.

The officers completed a 13-week training program at the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office Academy Bureau that included a variety of classroom and field instruction.

Instruction ranged from firearm safety and handling, defensive tactics and emergency medical training to physical fitness and testing, the release said.
