Two Suffolk County beaches were closed to swimmers Friday after “the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria,” health officials said.

Lake Ronkonkoma Beach and the Huntington Beach Community Association Beach in Centerport will remain closed until “testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels,” the county Health Department said in a news release.

Swimming in water contaminated by bacteria can result in gastrointestinal illness and infections, health officials said.

For the latest information on beaches, call the bathing beach hotline at 631-852-5822 or the Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760 during business hours.
