A Holbrook woman who police said was seriously injured when she crashed her car into a tree in Islip Terrace on Monday has been arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.

Michelle Quarles, 33, was driving west on Sunrise Highway's North Service Road, at Heckscher State Parkway, when she "failed to negotiate a turn," police said in a news release.

Her 2003 Subaru Forester went off the road and struck the tree at about 5:10 a.m., police said. The westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway were closed for hours after the crash.

Quarles was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment, police said. She will be arraigned at a later date.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
