A garbage truck burning on Sunrise Highway on Friday afternoon led to a five-hour shutdown of eastbound lanes in Suffolk County, State Police said.

The highway, off limits between Exit 62 in Eastport and Exit 63 in Westhampton, was reopened shortly before 7 p.m., authorities said.

Flames started about 1:45 p.m. in the cargo area of the 10-wheel dump truck, which was carrying construction debris and belongs to a private carter, police said.

It was not immediately clear what started the blaze, state police said, but motorists' patience was being tested in a complicated process to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters first had to shoot water on the truck, then dump the debris on the roadway so it could be doused, police said. Authorities had to wait for a second dump truck to arrive and take the debris away and for crews to clean up the roadway surface, police said.

Southampton Town fire marshal investigators were at the scene, police said.
