Sunrise Highway service road work to affect traffic pattern in Babylon, Islip towns, DOT says

Starting Monday, travel lanes on the Sunrise Highway service roads will be shifted or shut down for repairs over the next four months in Babylon and Islip towns, state transportation officials said.

As part of a $4.1 million repair project, the distressed, top layer will be stripped off between Belmont Avenue and Udall Road on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting in the fall, authorities said.

The westbound service road will be repaired first and take about eight weeks, followed by another eight weeks for the eastbound lanes, officials said.

Most of the time, one travel lane will be open, but there may be times when all the service lanes are closed to allow access for construction equipment, state officials said.

Besides repaving the roads, crews will repair the drainage system and structures, replace worn road signs and install new pavement markings and traffic signals, transportation officials said.
