Police ID man fatally struck riding scooter on Sunrise Highway

A Lindenhurst man riding a scooter in the middle eastbound lane of Sunrise Highway in West Babylon was struck by a motor vehicle early Monday morning and killed, Suffolk County police said.
Edward Marcuteanu, 43, was riding a Splach electric scooter about a quarter mile west of Exit 40 when he was struck by a 2016 Honda Accord at approximately 3:20 a.m., police said.
Marcuteanu was pronounced dead at the scene by an EMT from North Babylon Fire Department, police said.
The driver of the Honda and his passenger were both transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The Honda and scooter were both impounded for a safety checks.
Police said the road was closed in the area but has since been reopened.
First Squad detectives are still investigating the crash.
