Police charged the man with driving while under the influence of drugs and leaving the scene of an accident. They described him as a 22-year-old but have not otherwise identified him.

Police said the woman was on foot when she was struck by the car around 10:12 a.m. on Parkside Street. Chief Cliff Pendl of the Holbrook Fire Department said she appeared to have been pinned against her own vehicle by the vehicle that struck her. The woman's identity has not been released.

She was taken by helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center.
