Suffolk police are looking for a man who stole $2,000 cash from a wallet left on a counter at a McDonald's restaurant in West Islip.
Police described the suspect as a tall and heavyset man in his 20s or 30s.
The wallet's owner, who was about to visit Atlantic City, left it on the counter Monday morning after he paid for his coffee, Det. Pete Barba of the Third Squad said Thursday.
The suspect came into the McDonald's, ordered food and saw the wallet lying on the counter. "He just picked it up a like a vacuum cleaner and walked away," Barba said.
Someone else found the wallet in a trash bin, but the money was gone, Barba said. The theft occurred at about 8:30 a.m. Monday. Police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
