A drunken driver plowed over headstones in a Huntington cemetery Wednesday night, then tried to run away before being arrested, Suffolk County police said.
Allen Murray, 57, was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.
At first light Thursday, his snow-covered Ford Explorer was still in the middle of the Huntington Rural Cemetery near Oakwood Road and Boxer Court, stopped on top of a toppled headstone.
It was not immediately clear how the SUV got into the cemetery and ended up amid the headstones. Police said only that Murray "drove off the road into the cemetery" at 9:30 p.m.
A witness said six headstones had been toppled. Police could not immediately confirm that number.
Arraignment details were not immediately available.
