The Suffolk Surrogate's Court building in Riverhead is closed until 2 p.m. Thursday while fire officials investigate a suspicious odor.

The building at the Evans K. Griffing County Center was evacuated as a precaution Thursday morning when people in the building smelled the odor, which may have been related to work on the building's roof, a source said.

The Suffolk fire marshal's office, the Riverhead Fire Department and Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance personnel were on the scene.

The county office building next door, which includes offices for the county Legislature, the Labor Department and the Riverhead Health Center, remained open.
