A man teaching his wife how to drive crashed into a chiropractor’s office in Melville on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
Firefighters responded to the scene on Walt Whitman Road shortly after 2:30 p.m., Melville Fire Chief Jason Bernfeld said.
No one was inside the office at the time, Bernfeld said, and the two passengers were not hurt.
The Volkswagen sport utility vehicle smashed through the office’s glass facade, coming to a stop inside. The crash did not cause structural damage to the three-story building, Bernfeld said.
The driver and his wife looked on as their wrecked SUV was loaded onto a tow truck about an hour later.
“It happened so quick,” said the man, who declined to give his name.
He was showing his wife how to drive in an adjacent parking lot, he said, when his foot slipped off the brake onto the gas pedal, sending the car careening through a fence and into the office.
“I didn’t even have time to react,” he said. “It was pretty scary.”
