A sport utility vehicle smashed into the front wall of a Huntington Station pet store Wednesday morning, startling the store's inhabitants - mostly puppies and dogs - and damaging the building, a Huntington Manor fire department official said.

A Nissan Xterra hit the front wall of the Canine Corral pet store, 1845 New York Ave., and a utility pole at about 1:40 a.m., according to a release from the department.

"We went for possible extrication of people from the vehicle," 2nd Assistant Chief Fred Steenson Jr. said

The SUV's driver and passenger were able to exit the vehicle without the help of hydraulic cutters, Steenson said. They were taken to Huntington Hospital for minor injuries. Their conditions were not known, he said.

None of the animals were injured, Steenson said, but they were a little excited because of the accident.

About 25 Huntington Manor firefighters responded, along with two heavy rescue trucks and an engine.

It was not immediately clear if charges would be filed in the crash.
