A swan found with an arrow through its body near a park in Riverhead is recovering at a local rescue center, and the Suffolk County SPCA is trying to find out who did it.

The swan was found near Indian Island County Park, the SPCA said in a news release Saturday. The arrow was removed, but the swan is still unable to walk because of possible nerve damage. The swan is recovering at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays.

SPCA officials are offering $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

Roy Goss, chief of the Suffolk SPCA, said the case was the second act of cruelty against wildlife in two weeks.

Earlier this month, a box turtle was found injured in Sag Harbor after someone apparently drove a 3-inch nail through its shell. The nail was removed surgically and the turtle was expected to be released back into the wild.

SPCA officials were not immediately available to provide more information.

Anyone with information can call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls are kept confidential.
