A Manorville man died after police pulled him from the Atlantic Ocean in Shirley on Saturday night, Suffolk County police said.

Juan Martinez, 53, was swimming at Smith Point County Park when he became distressed and went under the water, police reported Sunday afternoon. Four Suffolk County police officers went into the water to pull him out shortly after the 8:05 p.m. call, police said.

Martinez was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide squad detectives are investigating, and the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death. Lifeguards were not on duty at the time, police said.

Foul play was not suspected, a police spokeswoman said.
