Teen driver seriously hurt in Hauppauge crash
Suffolk detectives are investigating a two-car accident that took place in Hauppauge early Monday morning, and left a teenage driver -- who police said apparently ran a red light -- in serious condition with a fractured hip and internal bleeding.
The 12:30 a.m. accident took place at the intersection of Route 347 and Route 111.
Police said Leonard Olmstead, 22, was driving his 2012 Audi north on Route 111, with a passenger in his car, when it was struck by a 1999 Volvo driven by a Connecticut man.
The Volvo driver, Todd Slater, 17, of Avon, Conn., "apparently ran a red light," Suffolk police said in a Monday news release. Slater was trapped in his car and had to be extricated by emergency workers. He was taken for treatment to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was admitted in serious condition. Olmstead and his passenger were treated for minor injuries.
