Teens charged with illegal racing in East Farmingdale
Two 19-year-olds were arrested after Suffolk police discovered a speed-racing contest in East Farmingdale early Saturday, police said.
Christopher Herbst and Levan Meishvili were spotted racing at about 12:20 Saturday morning on Central Avenue in East Farmingdale between New Highway and Wellwood Avenue, police said in a news release.
Herbst, of Island Park, and Meishvili, of Centerport, were arrested and each charged with an illegal speed contest violation. Their cars - a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier and a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse - were impounded.
Police said they also broke up the gathering. They believe Herbst and Meishvili are part of a "loosely organized group" of contestants and spectators that gets together to have street races.
