Fire that destroyed The Sandpiper, Westhampton Beach oceanfront co-op complex, not suspicious, cops say

A Westhampton Beach blaze that destroyed an oceanfront co-op complex has been deemed not suspicious, police said Thursday.

Village police and the Southampton Town fire marshal's office finished combing through the charred debris of The Sandpiper on Thursday, said police Chief Trevor Gonce.

He declined to provide details of any preliminary findings, saying "we don't have a definitive cause at the moment."

Investigators are preparing their report and the cause may be released Friday, Gonce said.

More than 75 firefighters from at least eight departments tried to contain a fire that was reported about 3 p.m. Wednesday at the oceanfront complex on Dune Road.

Village Mayor Maria Moore had said the complex had not yet opened for the season and only maintenance workers were on the property at the time.

Police said no injuries were reported.

Photos from the scene showed the fire engulfing nearly the entire structure.

The town fire marshal's office could not be immediately reached Thursday afternoon.
