St. Joseph's College on Wednesday named former Rep. Tim Bishop as its distinguished professor of civic engagement and public service.
College president Jack Calareso announced the appointment at a college convocation in Brooklyn.
Bishop, a Southampton Democrat who served 12 years in Congress, will teach and mentor students, run seminars and conferences, and create a center for community solutions for local and national issues.
Bishop, who will work out of the college's Patchogue campus, also will focus on a program to identify and recruit students with potential who might not ordinarily seek college educations.
Before Congress, Bishop, 64, was a longtime dean at Southampton College.
Bishop will also work part time at a bipartisan lobbying firm in Washington, D.C.
