An 18-month-old boy who fell into a fish pond during a party at a Dix Hills home Sunday evening was in the intensive-care unit of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, authorities said.

Tom Magno, first assistant chief of the Dix Hills Fire Department, said the department received a call about a child in cardiac arrest after 6 p.m.

"Prior to our arrival, the child was found face down in a fish pond, we're told, and was retrieved by an adult at the scene. Thankfully, there was a doctor at the party who initiated lifesaving techniques."

When the fire department rescue squad arrived, the child was in respiratory arrest and the emergency medical technicians worked on the child during the ambulance ride to the hospital, where the emergency room doctors were waiting, Magno said.
