Police are trying to determine how a person got onto the Long Island Rail Road tracks and was struck by a train and killed Monday night.

The person, whose identity has not been released, was fatally struck at about 7:45 p.m. east of the Bay Shore station, officials said.

A railroad spokesman said service was suspended on the branch between Babylon and Patchogue and passengers were accommodated by bus service.

Two eastbound trains, including the 7:27 p.m. train from Babylon to Speonk that hit the victim, and two westbound trains were affected. Service was restored at 10:50 p.m.

The MTA police are investigating the circumstances.
