Transgender teen relishes being Northport prom king

Charlie Fischetti made sure he and boyfriend Tom Nowak's tuxedos included color-coordinated bow ties and matching boutonnieres Thursday night -- to make it clear to everyone that they were going to the Northport High School senior prom together.

Fischetti, who identifies as transgender, started the evening at the Northport pre-prom party, held at Northport Village Park. There, he talked about a special moment that was coming later in the evening -- he was going to be named the school’s prom king.

“As a gay-transgender guy, it’s like, there’s a lot of adversities I’ve had to overcome,” Fischetti said. “And it’s good to know that you’ve been in this, like, small, kind of conservative town, that there are enough people who see me for who I am.”
