Brookhaven Town officials plan to give away tree seedlings to encourage residents to plant trees in their yards.

Free seedlings will be available from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Brookhaven Town Hall, 1 Independence Hill, Farmingville. Town officials hope to give away 10,000 seedlings by 2020.

Town officials distributed more than 2,000 tree saplings in Blue Point on April 24, running out of supplies in less than two hours.

Saplings and seedlings were purchased from a state Department of Environmental Conservation nursery in Saratoga, town officials said.

Town officials also are giving away mulch and compost at Town Hall and other town facilities. For information, call 631-451-8696.
