A tractor-trailer truck slammed into a bridge on the westbound Southern State Parkway near Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore Friday morning, shearing its roof and earning its driver a ticket, State Police said.

Fortunately, officials said, the driver was uninjured -- and it appears the bridge was not structurally damaged.

Trucks are not allowed on the parkway, but the state Department of Transportation said there are at least a dozen incidents, on average, each month involving trucks.

The crash happened near Exit 42, police said.

Police said the truck was empty, but said the roof was sheared off the trailer.

The crash occurred at about 6:30 a.m. and was cleared at about 8:30 a.m., police said.
