The cargo of a flatbed truck struck a bridge over the Long Island Expressway in Holtsville and toppled onto the roadway, shutting down the westbound lanes for almost three hours, Suffolk police said.

The flatbed was transporting a utility storage unit that was too high for the Waverly Avenue bridge, police said.

The unit hit the bridge about noon time, authorities said, and traffic had to be diverted from the LIE at Exit 63, North Ocean Avenue.

Police said no one was injured and officers were examining the truck for safety compliance to determine if summonses were warranted.
