Police: Fire damages Middle Island apartment complex

An early morning fire Wednesday at an apartment complex in Middle Island forced the evacuation of a half-dozen units but was extinguished without anyone being injured, police said.

The complex, called Tudor Oaks, is on Tudor Lane, and Suffolk County police said it was the site of another fire in the same building last weekend.

The fire Wednesday was reported in a 911 call at 2:36 a.m., police said. Volunteers from five fire departments -- Middle Island, Yaphank, Ridge, Coram and Gordon Heights -- responded to the call.

Police said that the fire was contained to building No. 2. The building has 16 units, six of which were affected by to smoke and water damage, police said. Police said one of those units already was vacant because of the previous fire, which they said was unrelated.

The American Red Cross also responded to assist in finding temporary housing for displaced residents, police said. Police said that the cause of the fire is being investigated by detectives from the Arson Squad.
