A soon-to-be-mom terrier and border collie mix found an out-of-the-way place to give birth -- underneath a shed on the Shirley property where she lives.

Turns out it was a little too out-of-the-way: Six of her newborns couldn't get out so she stuck right there with them until they could get rescued with a little help from some human friends.

Responding to a Friday morning 911 call telling of animals in distress were Seventh Precinct officers, as well as personnel from the Suffolk County SPCA and Brookhaven Town Animal Control, Suffolk County police said.

One officer, who found a newborn pup concealed under a pile of nearby leaves, also heard the others crying from under the shed's floor, police said. After emergency services officers, also on the scene, used power tools to remove the shed's floorboards, the rescuers removed the mom, puppies and a buddy -- an adult Yorkshire terrier. All the dogs were returned to the owner who resides at the Starlight Drive address.

The two adults and "seven beautiful puppies" seemed to be in good health and were taken to an area veterinarian for a checkup, said Paul Llobell, SPCA detective.

The collaborative rescue operation "worked out well," he said.
