Firefighters led a man from a burning house in Commack Tuesday morning after his grandparents had escaped the home, then returned to save two chinchillas from the blaze, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze on Crabapple Lane, though Commack fire chief Steve Fontana said one cat remained unaccounted for.

Firefighters originally believed a mother and daughter also were trapped in the blaze, but Fontana said it turned out the two were not home at the time the fire broke out.

The fire was reported at 9:55 a.m., Suffolk County police and Suffolk fire officials said.

Volunteers from Commack, Smithtown and Kings Park fought the blaze, which officials said began on a deck outside the home and then spread along an outside wall.

The fire filled the upstairs bedrooms with a lot of thick, acrid smoke Fontana, said.

He said volunteers knocked down the bedroom door to led the grandson, whose identity was not released, to safety.

The rescued chinchillas were in a cage. A dog initially thought to be missing was later found outside the home, officials said.
