Seven people were evacuated from a raging fire at a multifamily dwelling in Lindenhurst Wednesday morning, Suffolk County police said. No one was injured.

The blaze was on South Smith Street at a home that had been converted into apartments, police said.

Two families were still inside when police and firefighters arrived, officials said.

It was not immediately clear how many were adults and how many were children, police said.

Volunteers from Lindenhurst, Copiague, North Lindenhurst and West Babylon extinguished the blaze. South Smith Street remained closed between East Hoffman Avenue and Gates Avenue until 6:45 a.m., but county fire officials said it was being reopened. Arson Squad detectives were on the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
