Two firefighters hurt in Dix Hills blaze
Two volunteer firefighters were injured and a school bus was destroyed in a fire Sunday evening at the Half Hollow Hills School District Transportation Center in Dix Hills.
Fire officials said one firefighter from the Huntington Manor Fire Department was injured when she fell into an open pit, while the other, a volunteer from the Melville Fire Department, suffered smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.
The Huntington Manor firefighter suffered bruised ribs, fire officials said. She was treated at Huntington Hospital Sunday and released. The Melville firefighter was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was treated and later released.
The fire at the transportation facility on Burr's Lane was reported about 8:30 p.m.
Officials said about 125 volunteers from Melville, Dix Hills, Huntington Manor, Plainview and Syosset battled the blaze, which was brought under control in about 35 minutes.
The fire destroyed a bus inside the facility, officials said, and caused "extensive damage" to the roof of the building. Officials said there also was "heavy smoke damage" to the site.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
The Suffolk County police Arson Squad, as well as the Town of Huntington and Melville Fire Marshals are investigating the incident.
