Two firefighters were hospitalized with minor injuries suffered fighting a blaze that engulfed an unoccupied house Thursday morning in Dix Hills, Suffolk County police and fire officials said. A witness said a dog also was rescued at the scene.

Officials said the fire at the home on Rustic Gate Lane was reported at about 9:25 a.m.

The caller reported "flames" on the roof of the home.

Volunteers from the Dix Hills and Greenlawn fire departments responded to the scene, as did a crew from Commack Volunteer Ambulance.

The street was shut down at about 9:30 a.m., and fire officials said reports from the scene were that the fire had been knocked down and was under control at about 10:10 a.m.

The two injured firefighters were transported to Huntington Hospital, fire officials said. Their injuries were described as "minor" -- though no additional details were available.

Police said arson investigators responded to the call.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
