A casual weekend softball game among local firefighters quickly became serious over the weekend after one firefighter was knocked unconscious by a softball, and a second firefighter was struck by a car while rushing to get medical equipment to aid him, police said.

Islip Terrace firefighter Robert Powers Jr. was taken to a hospital for treatment of a broken leg, police said, and John Mendoza, 35, also of Islip Terrace, was also treated. Neither injury was life-threatening, police said.

Mendoza was knocked unconscious about 8 p.m. Sunday in Islandia, police said. Powers then went to get a medical bag from his vehicle near the intersection of Old Nichols Road and Express Drive South when he was struck, police said.

There were no charges against the driver of the vehicle, Margherita Martinez, 37, of Islandia.
