Two hurt as car slams into utility pole in Huntington

A 55-year-old and her 87-year-old mother-in-law were injured Tuesday morning after the woman lost control of her sport utility vehicle and knocked down a utility pole in Huntington, police said.

Both women suffered minor injuries and were taken to Huntington Hospital for treatment, Suffolk County police said.

Police have not released the identities of either woman.

The single-vehicle accident occurred at 10:56 a.m. on westbound Oakland Street.

Police said the 55-year-old driver lost control and struck the pole, snapping it in half.

Live electrical wires then fell onto the vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Murano, trapping the two women inside until a Long Island Power Authority emergency crew could get to the scene and turn off the power. Police did not know how long the women were in the car.

Police said both women complained of chest and neck pain and were taken to the hospital. Crews were still on scene trying to repair the damaged pole.
