A Port Jefferson Station man narrowly escaped being crushed Friday afternoon when a dump truck's brakes failed and the vehicle toppled onto his car in Centereach, Suffolk police said.

Rafael Henriquez, 38, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center after the 3:30 p.m. accident at Nicolls and Hawkins roads.

Police said Henriquez received non-life-threatening injuries when a Mack truck driven by Kenneth Darwell, 48, of East Patchogue, went through a red light as the brakes failed, swerved and tipped over onto Henriquez's Honda Odyssey.

Darwell, a driver for Patchogue Truck and Equipment, was also taken to the hospital in Stony Brook for treatment of an arm laceration, police said.

Henriquez was in fair condition Friday night at the hospital, officials said, and Darwell had been discharged.

Darwell was driving on Nicolls Road while Henriquez was crossing from Hawkins Road, police said.

No charges have been filed in connection with the crash and police said they believe mechanical failure is to blame.
