Two people were injured on Sunrise Highway on Friday morning when they pulled over for a flat tire and were struck from behind by another vehicle, Suffolk County police and the sheriff's office said.
The westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway were closed for several hours near Exit 41, Manor Lane, while police and sheriff's deputies investigated.
The westbound lanes were reopened at 4:51 p.m. Friday, the state's informny.com website said.
The 10:36 a.m. accident occurred between exits 41 and 42 when a 49-year-old woman, driving west, slowed down and pulled over her Nissan Sentra because of a flat tire, Suffolk police said. The car was struck from behind by a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 34-year-old woman, police said.
The driver of the Sentra suffered a broken clavicle, and her 27-year-old female passenger suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs, police said.
They were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver of the Hyundai was treated and released, police said.
No tickets were issued, and the accident remained under investigation, police said.
Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8335.
