A Queens man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after a car accident in Mattituck Sunday morning that also injured a second person, police said.
Police said the driver of the Ford jeep, Mario Barrera Vega, 23, fell asleep at the wheel and collided with a utility pole on Sound Avenue at 9:40a.m. He was uninjured.
But passenger Santiago Sacancela was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with “unspecified, apparent non-life threatening injuries,” police said.
The other injured passenger, Lorrtes Chimborazo, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Mattituck Rescue to be treated for a head injury and minor bleeding.
All six passengers in the jeep were residents of Corona, and among them was one-year-old Jasmine Barrera, who was uninjured, police said.
The accident uprooted the struck utility pole, closing the road for some time. As of 10:50a.m., PSEG had secured the broken utility pole, and the road was reopened a short time later.
