Two people were hit by gunfire in Bay Shore on Friday night, Suffolk police said.

A homicide detective was at Center Avenue and Oak Street, where shots had been fired about 9:30 p.m.

A man who lives near the shooting said he heard many shots “so many it sounded like somebody setting off fireworks.” A young man from the neighborhood was shot in a yard on Center Avenue while the other victim was shot in an empty lot across the yard, he said.

An emergency service truck was let into the crime scene about 1 a.m. and its spotlights were turned on to illuminate the crime scene. Crime lab technicians and officers then walked in a line down the roadway looking for evidence, shining their flashlights down on the blacktop.

Details on what exactly happened to the victims or whether anyone had been arrested were not immediately available early Saturday morning.

The crime scene is just behind the Bay Shore train station, an area that has seen its share of drug dealing and other problems over the decades.
