Two people were hospitalized Sunday after a Brentwood house caught fire, authorities said.

More than 50 first responders rushed to the scene of the blaze at a white house shortly before noon. By early afternoon, eight fire trucks and a handful of police cars were there. The inside of the home on Carroll Street was charred.

First responders had to rescue one family member, Brentwood Fire Chief Javier Valentin said.

The conditions of the two people taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore were not known Sunday night.

Fire officials said Sunday night the cause of the fire was under investigation.

"We were downstairs in the basement when somebody yelled 'smoke,' " said Jose Erazo, 46, who has lived at the house about five years.

Erazo, who was watching television at the time of the fire, said he and most of the seven family members inside raced out of the home.

Erazo said it was his mother-in-law and father-in-law who were taken to the hospital.

While he saw a lot of black smoke, he said he didn't know where the fire was coming from or what created it.
