Two women in their 70s were burned at an East Farmingdale backyard barbecue gathering when there was an explosion underneath the grill Wednesday, Suffolk police said.

One of two spray cans under the grill may have exploded at a Leanore Drive home, sending the women, one 70 years old and the other 77, to Nassau University Medical Center, police said. The explosion happened about 3:50 p.m., police said.

The women's injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

It was not clear what the spray cans contained, but arson detectives concluded the accident was noncriminal, police said.
