Utility workers quickly repaired damage to a natural gas line in a Dix Hills residential neighborhood Thursday morning after an excavator caused a leak, Suffolk police said.

Officers at the scene, on Vanderbilt Parkway just west of Deer Park Avenue, reopened to traffic soon after the repairs, a police spokeswoman said.

A utility crew arrived soon after the 8 a.m. accident occurred, police said. As they worked, traffic was diverted from the Vanderbilt Parkway during the morning rush hour.
